HPV self-sampling via General Practitioners
More women can now use HPV self-sampling!
In late 2023, the rollout of HPV self-sampling kits to doctors began. This service is now available at all GP practices across Norway.
We understand that many people find it difficult to undergo cervical screening via a gynaecological examination (GE) at their doctor’s office. If this applies to you, you can discuss alternative solutions with your doctor, such as having another doctor perform the examination or being referred to a gynaecologist. HPV self-sampling could also be an option for you.
Who is eligible for HPV self-sampling through their doctor?
- Women who have not undergone cervical screening for at least 10 years. These women will receive a letter from Cervical Screen Norway, informing them that they can request an HPV self-sampling kit from their doctor.
- Women and others with a cervix aged 25 and above who cannot undergo cervical screening due to physical, psychological, or cultural challenges with GE.
This could include individuals who:
- Have never undergone cervical screening or have not been screened in over 10 years.
- Have experienced violence or sexual trauma.
- Have disabilities.
- Have undergone female genital mutilation.
- Face other barriers to undergoing a GE.
190.000 women have not been screened in over 10 years
In the future, the Cervical Screen Norway plans to send HPV self-sampling kits directly to those who have not had cervical screening for at least 10 years. Preliminary data suggests that approximately 190.000 women in Norway fall into this category. Information for these women will eventually be available on Helsenorge, in digital mailboxes, or as physical letters. A selection of this group have already received letters from Cervical Screen Norway, informing them that they can request an HPV self-sampling kit from their doctor.
Have you opted out of reminders from the Cervical Screen Norway?
If you have opted out of reminders and the storage of your test results, you will not receive an offer for self-sampling.
