EULAT Eradicate Gallbladder Cancer

EULAT Eradicate Gallbladder Cancer (GBC) aims to improve the prevention, early detection and treatment of gallbladder cancer. The Cancer Registry of Norway is responsible for work package (WP) 3: Novel biomarkers for GBC risk prediction and early detection.

Summary

Gallbladder cancer (GBC) is a highly aggressive malignancy of the biliary tract and affects over 175,000 persons worldwide. While, GBC is relatively rare in Western Europe and the United states, it is highly prevalent in several countries in South-East Asia and South-America, where Chile has the highest incidence rate.  Because most GBC-related deaths occur in low- to middle-income countries research into the disease has been limited.

The overall project aims are to significantly improve the early detection and accuracy of risk estimation of GBC by identifying and adequately consider geographical, environmental, lifestyle, ethnic, gender and molecular differences. The project is divided into eight work packages (WPs), where the Cancer Registry of Norway is responsible for WP3: Novel biomarkers for GBC risk prediction and early detection. Our project group will use the well-established small RNA sequencing protocol, to investigate if there are any early/pre-diagnostic changes in the small RNA in the blood serum compared to healthy controls. In addition, analysis DNA methylation and genotyping will be performed.
