Biaskriterium er basert på biologisk variasjon, innen et individ og mellom individer. Den prosentvise forskjellen mellom ferske og langtidslagrede prøver må ikke avvike mer enn tillatt bias dersom man skal kunne angi forskjellen som ubetydelig.
Med ny teknologi kan Janusmaterialet brukes i genetiske studier. For eksempel har vi vist at miRNA og DNA i prøvene er av god nok kvalitet til å gjøre sekvenseringsanalyser.
