Development

Presently, all incoming paper-based reports are scanned. This is very resource demanding – particularly on quality assurance of data. The short-term goal is to develop digitalized rather than paper-based registrations of gastrointestinal endoscopy examinations in collaboration with the Cancer Registry of Norway. Investment in digitalized reporting systems implies that we can expand to include more hospitals – both in Norway and abroad. This will generate a much larger database in shorter time, embracing different endoscopy cultures and patient expectations which may differ between regions and countries.  Thus, the output results from interventions may be more easily tested for generalizability.

The long-term goal is to use the Gastronet database for intervention studies to improve performance and services of gastrointestinal endoscopy – primarily colonoscopy (about 50,000 examinations annually in Norway) and ERCP (about 2500 per year, but carrying a high risk of complications).
