Breast Cancer Screening Programme

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Norway. Based on normal life expectancy, one in ten women will develop breast cancer at some time in their life.

Regular mammography is the most important method today for detecting breast cancers at an early stage. Early detection often reduces the risk of dying from breast cancer. In addition, early detection more often makes breast-conserving surgery possible.

  • Breast cancer diagnosed at an early stage reduces the risk of advanced disease and often leads to improved prognosis.
  • Mammography detects breast cancer at an early stage
  • Regular participation in The Norwegian Breast Cancer Screening Programme may reduce the risk of dying from breast cancer.
  • About four in every 100 of the participants are recalled for further examinations
  • About one in seven of those who are recalled have changes that need to be treated
  • Some breast cancers may not be found by mammography screening. Practice breast awareness, and contact your doctor immediately if you detect any changes
